Hounds Haven Basset Rescue Of Iowa - Nothing Butt Bassets

In 2017, Hounds Haven Basset Rescue (HHBR) continued to carry out its mission by having the privilege of helping 22 Basset Hounds and Basset Hound Mixes into our foster care program and rehabilitating them from illness, injuries and evaluated behavioral needs to happy and healthy.  A milestone we would not have been able to achieve without the help of volunteers, donors and community members like you.

As this year comes to a close, we ask you to take a moment to support our animals with a generous donation. Your gift will help us defray the cost of essential supplies, medications, and veterinary care and meet our critical goal of raising $4,000 by year’s end.
We rely on generous donors like you to provide the support like the “December Six” need to survive.  In this month alone HHBR has helped 6 Bassets and Basset Mixes into our program—Bernard, Flash, Emmy, Roxy, Dixie, and Dixie2 (add photos-YES).  Six hounds in less than 25 days with varying degrees of medical needs is a huge undertaking for our small rescue.  From ages 2-10 years, their vetting has included vaccinations, Heartworm testing, dewormings, spay/neutering, bloodwork, mass removals, injury treatment and continued care, monthly preventatives, etc.  Not to mention new collars and leashes.
Flash, one of the “December Six” was bought and loved by a family in Iowa, but after the kids no longer had interest in caring for him he was placed in an outdoor pen with another family dog.  As you can see, living conditions in the pen were less than ideal, where Flash was abandoned to the outdoors with little human contact. Flash’s collar was left so tightly on him that over time it became embedded into his neck and an infection developed. The only way HHBR’s veterinarian could remove Flash’s collar was to cut it with a bolt cutter as the infection and debris had made using the buckle impossible.  Flash also had to have 8 teeth removed, a full panel of vaccinations, heartworm testing, fecal, deworming, and bloodwork. He has spent the past several weeks in his foster home healing his physical wounds with antibiotics, love, and some delicious “groceries.”
We are happy to say that all of the hounds we have taken in to help in 2017 have found wonderful forever homes. Four senior boys still remain in our care as Forever Fosters and the “December Six” aren’t quite ready for adoption as they are still undergoing vetting and evaluation. We know they will at least ring in the new year feeling loved and staying warm in their foster homes. Sadly, however, we also said goodbye to numerous HHBR Alumni and to 2 HHBR hounds, Gomer and Baxter. If you’d like to memorialize your HHBR hound that went to the Rainbow Bridge, please email us a photo and a short description of what your hound meant to you to amdin@houndshavenbassetrescue.com. We are working on getting this page of our website updated and need your photos and stories.
As this year comes to a close we are thankful for the wonderful village that has helped us to save 22 friends this year. Without we would not have been able to accomplish this. As is the case with a small rescue like ours, there are many more hounds that we would have liked to help but could not. At this time of year, many of you are likely finding your mailbox filled with requests from organizations for a year-end donation.  Most of these requests are deserving of your support. I hope you put this request from Hounds Haven Basset Rescue in the same category.

As you think about the size of your gift, please consider the magnitude and importance of the challenges that our breed faces and what your gift can accomplish.  Your gift will show others that you took the vital step to make this rescue a force for the good of the Basset Hound.
Your year-end gift to HHBR will make a difference in the future of our breed.
